Personal Statement
"My initial inspiration for writing memoirs and tributes came one day when I visited my mother at her new senior's residence. At her first lunch, we shared a table with an elderly couple. The woman enjoyed her dessert, and was happy to chat. Her husband, unable to speak, dozed off before finishing his soup. His wife told us he had served as a Canadian Ambassador to the US in Washington DC. I thought, what stories are locked up in there! My mother had Alzheimer's. Although her memory was fading, I collaborated with her to produce a memoir. It was an engaging process we both enjoyed - reminding each other of events, milestones, and people in her life. I hoped she could use the brief colourful book with its photographs as a memory-aid in years to come, and that it would serve as a conversation-starter and bridge with her caregivers and fellow residents. My mother passed away within weeks of our starting the project. But we had lively conversations including our last, and I prepared her memoir as a tribute-biography for friends and relatives. Now it is connecting and informing family members of all ages, including distant cousins with whom we had lost touch. It would be my honour and pleasure to help you and loved ones make a lasting book of memories, or other legacy projects, while you have the opportunity." Sincerely, Barbara Campbell
